BlackBerry has had it up to here with your terrible passwords

Research in Motion has created a list of passwords that users of its BlackBerry 10 operating system will be forbidden from using, according to a report released Monday at RapidBerry. The 106 passwords, including “123456,” “batman,” “changeme,” and “butthead,” cannot be used to log in to BlackBerry websites, apps, or services.

Password use, while not the bastion of security it once was, is especially unhelpful when users put zero effort into coming up with a secure password. RIM is therefore putting its foot down with those people, perhaps because the company, which stakes much of its dwindling reputation on security, is tired of being undermined by users who can’t be bothered to type something more complicated than “asdfgh” to login forms.

While some passwords are obviously banned for their overuse and simplicity, there are some that don’t seem to quite fit that mold, like “cowboy,” “dragon,” “gandalf,” and “august.” A fair few are just somewhat common first names: “amanda,” “michael,” and “steven.” Other banned names are less so: “marina” and “maggie,” for instance. Some Winnie the Pooh and Disney characters are verboten: “tigger,” “pooh,” “donald,” and “mickey.” RIM also betrays its homeland by banning “canada” and “hockey.”
